KWE - The Jaguar XJS Restoration Specialists called Thread Fix to correct a difficult situation they discovered on a car in their workshops.
A hole was badly off centre from an attempt to drill out a sheared off sump retaining bolt. The repair pictures show how this was fixed, the off centre hole was tapped 3/8 UNF and a piece of aluminium rod also tapped 3/8 UNF was marked and cut to 3/4 of the way through its diameter. The prepared rod with loctite stud lock was wound in and sheared at the 3/4 cut when tight. The area was dressed back flat with a miniature belt sander.
The sump was put back in place and held with screws at the 4 corners to align it in the correct position, a clearance drill was then used to centre mark the engine base. With the sump removed I then drilled and tapped the original 5/16 UNC thread.
This wasn’t a cheap repair, it was far more cost effective than removing the engine to have this repaired in a machine shop.
